Description

On this excursion through the Guajira desert, you will come across a unique landscape with beautiful bays and beaches where the desert borders the crystal-clear water of the Caribbean sea. Enjoy the perfect mix of exploring the rough rocks of the desert and relaxing with a view at the ocean.

Day 1
At 8 am on the first day, you’ll be picked up at your hotel by your driver and your guide. After departing Riohacha, you’ll enter the desert and get a first impression of the amazing landscape. After a 2-hour drive you’ll reach the salt flats of Manaure, where the locals produce sea salt in a careful process that’ll be explained to you while you walk along the salt water pools. Continuing your trip, you’ll reach the slow-paced village of Cabo de la Vela at around 1 pm. Here you will have lunch and time to relax a bit before the next activity.

In the afternoon, you’ll visit a typical farm of the local indigenous tribe, the Wayuu. You’ll have a chance to learn about their customs and traditions and get in touch with their culture. After this captivating experience you’ll enjoy the sunset from Pilón de Azúcar, a large rock formation that plays an important role in the Wayuu Culture. You’ll then have a delicious and filling dinner at your accommodation.

Day 2
On the next morning, after breakfast, you will continue your expedition toward the northernmost part of the continent. With stops at scenic spots with bays and oasis harbors within the desert you’ll reach your lunch location at the beach around midday. Following this relaxing break, you will encounter one of the most impressive attractions of la Guajira, the dunes of Taroa. Crossing the enormous sand mountains you’ll get a unique view at the paradisiac beaches guarded by them. You will have some time to take a dip in the ocean and enjoy this remote location.

In the afternoon, you will reach the destination of your journey - the lighthouse of Punta Gallinas. Enjoy the tranquil atmosphere and document your encounter to the northern end of South America. While away the evening at your accommodation enjoying a satisfying meal before getting some rest.

Day 3
On the last day of your excursion, after having breakfast, you will have the chance to discover La Guajira from a new perspective. Taking a boat ride around Hondita Bay you’ll be able to get scenic views of the amazing landscape. After this unique experience, you’ll be taken to Uribia where you’ll have lunch before arriving back at Riohacha in the afternoon.

Important information

Don’t forget

It’s a road trip…
The distances in La Guajira are large so be aware that you will spend some time in the car. However, the guides will make enough stops so you travel comfortably.

Living like a local...
The infrastructure in La Guajira is still very basic. Do not expect luxury in accommodation nor food. Please consider that especially in Punta Gallinas the accommodation will be correspondingly simple (no running water).

Respect resources...
Energy and water scarcity is noticeable throughout la Guajira. Please make an adequate use of the resources.

Enjoy being off the grid...
Cell phone reception is very limited and you won’t have access to wifi except for emergencies, so let your loved ones know that you’ll be offline for a few days.

How this tour creates an impact

Most travelers visit La Guajira for the unique landscapes to be found; however, the culture that preserves this nature is of great importance within this territory. The Wayuú indigenous people are one of oldest communities in this area. Despite this, they have had to adapt to the environment and economic conditions of urban context. Therefore, the support of the cultural initiatives of these communities is necessary  to preserve their ancestral knowledge and their living practices. In addition to the economic resources that contribute to the survival of these communities, the tour safeguards the culture and fosters respect and interest in the lifestyle of Wayuú People.

This tour is part of our HEART experiences.
